8 Fun Fall Camping Activities to Bring the Cozy Vibes 🍁

Fall camping is a little bit magic. Crisp air, crunchy leaves, cozy layers, and all the pumpkin-flavored everything you can handle. If you’re lucky enough to snag a campsite in autumn, lean all the way into the seasonal vibes with these fun family camping activities and treats. Bonus: they don’t take much work, because camping is supposed to be fun…not a second job. 😉

1. Pumpkin Pancakes & Waffles 🎃

Nothing says fall like pumpkin spice and you can bring it straight to your campsite breakfast. My trusty mini waffle maker (a campground MVP) makes it ridiculously easy to whip up pumpkin waffles or and I’m partial to Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Pancake & Waffle Mix. Pre-mix the batter at home or just toss the box in your camp bin—either way, you’ll be the hero when that pumpkin spice smell drifts across the campground.
👉 Not in the mood to cook? Trader Joe’s also has cider donuts, pumpkin kringle, and other fall treats that require nothing more than opening the package. (Zero dishes = pure camping joy.)

2. Pumpkin Painting & Carving

Where better to decorate pumpkins than at a campsite? The mess stays outside (not on your kitchen table), and kids can go wild painting, carving, or sticker-ing their gourds. Pack a few cheap paintbrushes, a trash bag for scraps, and let their creativity run wild. The best part? Your campsite instantly looks like a festive fall porch.

3. Hot Cider by the Campfire ☕🍎

Fall nights + campfires basically demand something warm in your mug. I swear by my trusty Keurig (yes, it has shown up in my “bougie camping” posts before), which makes it ridiculously easy to brew up some cider, Motts makes one that works great in the Keurig. If you rough it a little more, you can always just heat up some apple juice! In minutes, everyone’s sipping steaming cider by the fire. Bonus mom hack: toss in a cinnamon stick and pretend you’re the star of a Hallmark fall movie.

4. Fall Hiking Scavenger Hunt 🥾🍂

Turn your hike into a fall adventure with a scavenger hunt. Look for acorns, red leaves, animal tracks, or pinecones, and let the kids check them off a printable sheet. It keeps little legs moving, little eyes looking, and little mouths too busy calling out finds to ask, “Are we there yet?” every two minutes.

5. Family Football Toss 🏈

Nothing beats a good old-fashioned game of catch on a crisp fall day. Pack a soft Nerf football—it’s light enough for littler kids to throw, soft enough that no one cries when it bonks them in the head, and durable enough to survive both dirt and dew. This is one of those camping activities that’s perfect way to burn off s’mores energy before bedtime.

6. Leaf Rubbing Craft 🍁✏️

Simple, mess-free crafts are camping gold, and leaf rubbings are as easy as it gets. Grab some white paper and crayons, go on a leaf hunt, and let the kids place their finds under the page. Rub the crayon sideways and—like magic—the leaf’s shape and veins appear. Kids get excited, you get a few quiet minutes with your camp coffee, and your site is suddenly decorated with original fall “art.”

7. Pinecone Bird Feeder Craft 🐦🌰

We’re big fans of birding, and fall camping is the perfect time to give back to the feathered friends you’ve probably been spotting on your hikes. All you need are pinecones (easy to find around camp), peanut butter, and birdseed. Let the kids slather peanut butter onto the pinecones (messy hands = happy campers), roll them in seed, and then hang them from a branch with a bit of string. It’s simple, fun, and turns your campsite into a birdwatching hotspot the next morning. Bonus: kids feel like little wildlife heroes.

8. Spooky Story Time Around the Fire 🔦👻

No fall camping trip is complete without a round of scary stories under the stars. For a little nostalgia hit, pack some Goosebumps books or a Choose Your Own Adventure classic—because nothing says childhood like reading by flashlight and arguing over which page to turn to next. It’s just the right mix of silly and spooky, and a guaranteed way to set the perfect fall campfire mood.

Final Thoughts

Fall camping is about leaning into the cozy: warm drinks, crunchy leaves, messy pumpkins (outside your house, thank you very much), and family fun under the autumn sky. With just a little prep, you can turn your campsite into a fall wonderland—and maybe even sneak in a few quiet sips of coffee while the kids are busy with their masterpieces. 😉
